Shred-a-Thon

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office is looking to shred any opportunity identity thieves may be looking for.

The department has partnered with Shred-it to offer shred-a-thons across the county in July and August.

At each shredding site, the public will be able to shred two boxes or bags of personal and financial information for free.

"These identity thieves want to prey upon the elderly more than the rest of the population and so we're providing this free service to help them to get rid of those documents," said Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley.

If a person has more than that, they will be charged $10 per box and the money will be donated to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office courthouse victim assistance dog, Moose.

Romley added," I will continue to vigorously prosecute cases of identity theft, but more importantly, I want to work with the community to prevent these crimes from happening in the first place."

One of the most effective ways to prevent identity theft is to shred personal documents.

The next shred-a-thon will be from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, at the Sun City Recreation Center, 10626 W. Thunderbird Road in Sun City, AZ.

On July 29 the trucks will be in Surprise for a shred-a-thon from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., at the Sun City Grand Recreation Center, 19753 N. Remington Drive in Surprise, AZ.
